Using Multiplication to Divide

Today, we tried a new division strategy!  We used multiplication to divide.  With this method, students use multiplication facts that they know to divide greater numbers, like the example from the textbook below.

 Using the new method:

Give your child a 3-digit number to divide by a 1-digit number.  Ask him/her to demonstrate the strategy for you.

Note:  Some of the difficulties that students encountered were actually with the subtraction part of the division.  So, when working with your child at home, that is a common area of error to monitor.
