This Week In Grade 5

This week, students have been madly working on their Voyage imaginaire au Carnaval de Québec writing.  They are so creative!  Some are making posters, others have opted to display their ideas in scrapbooks or booklets - they are looking pretty amazing!  While learning about Carnaval, we tumbled upon traditional Québecois cuisine.  Kai though we should definitely try fêves au lard (traditional French Canadian baked beans).  So today our classroom is filled with the aroma of fêves au lard, which we topped with maple syrup, of course!!

In math, we have been focused on our Geometry unit. Students can name, describe and classify 2-D shapes, measure angels, and construct triangles!  Be prepared for a summative assessment on Wednesday.  Next week, we will shift to 3-D shapes and nets.

We have finally begun our much anticipated unit on Ancient Civilisations in Social Studies.  Students have greatly enjoyed exploring the pile of library books that Mrs.Campbell-Sheen has put together for us.  I have had to drag Nate away from the book table more than once- he is probably our best resource, constantly sharing facts and supplementing our lessons with his knowledge.  Thanks, Nate!

In English, students are finishing up their persuasive writing pieces, due before March Break.  As February 27th was National Pink Shirt Day, (a snowday at Admiral), we have borrowed a wonderful idea from Runde's Room (my hero blogger), and today students worked on writing an I Am Poem from a given perspective (bully, bullied, bystander).  Students will use their poem to design their own pink t-shirt to stand up against bullying.  The poems are so full of emotion and insight - Emma's made me cry. Very powerful!  It's a shame that not all our poets signed their work. Thank you Jen Runde for sharing your lesson.

Next week, I will bring my camera to school  and post some pictures of student work.

N.B. Please note the class calendar at the bottom of the blog.
