Jambo!
In January, Zahra's grandmother volunteered to speak to the class about her native country of Kenya. Her family immigrated to Kenya from India, and has lived there for seven generations. Mrs. Saigair has kept both her Indian and Kenya cultures alive.
Mrs. Saigar taught us some Kenyan greetings, as well as a few other words. She taught us a bit about the history and the culture from Kenya. We were surprised to learn that Kenya has only been independent from Great Britain for just over 50 years.
Mrs. Saigar was with us for about an hour and a half, but we could have kept her the whole day! She even brought in some treats that she made, for us to sample. Once she packed up, she headed over to Mrs. Hammond's class to spend the remainder of the day with them, teaching them of her homeland as well.
Asante Mama!
Thank you for teaching us about Kenya, the people and their culture!
