Day Two!

Half of our week is already done!

FRANÇAIS

Wow!  I was pleasantly surprised at how much French your children already know!  We sang, counted, discussed the weather, created a gigantic spider web while intoducing ourselves in French and stating something that we like.  Not only did we learn something about each other, create a very cool web, we also used the web to show how, we as a group, are all connected.

Later, we scripted a conversation containing our personal information and practised asking and answering questions with a partner.  The most challenging part of the conversation is stating our address and phone number in French.

NUMERACY

In my Math group, a few brave students shared their math journals with the class - The Best Number. Thomas was really off to a convincing start.  He argues that zero is the best number.  Monica's Magical 7 journal is enchanting and well supported!  I wish I had scanned their journals, and a few other samples, before leaving tonight so I could share them with you.  I may add them to this post tomorrow, so visit again!

After predicting and investigating how many steps it takes to get to various places within the school, students estimated how many steps the average student walks in a day.  Our text book claims 10 000 steps, to which we more or less agreed.  Hopefully, the couple of students with pedometers will remember to put them on tomorrow to confirm or negate our educated guesses.

Students worked well in groups to compare four 4-digit numbers and explain to an alien, unfamiliar with our number system, how they know which number is closest to 10 000.

Tomorrow we will begin our lesson with a Bansho to consolidate learning. You make click on the link for a description of Bansho.  As you can see, the groups came up with a variety of ways to solve the problem.  Some use placed value charts, graphs, models/diagrams to demonstrate their method/reasoning.  I missed a few groups (I thought I had photographed them all - I will add the others tomorrow).

Mlle Dunne, Mme McLean and Mrs. Barr also lead math groups, so your child may have had a different math experience today.

SCIENCE

Today students met their Science teachers for the first time.  We have three blended Science classes (same groups as the blended math classes).  The three teachers are Mrs. Halligan, Mrs Lashley, and Mr. Kemsley.

ENGLISH (READING AND WRITING)

This afternoon we brainstorm a variety of ways to organize and classify books.  Then proved that Reading is Thinking.  We are following the First 20 Days of Reading lessons by Fontinas and Pinnel.  Then we had time to read the book we were unable to read yesterday The First Day Jitters (with a surprise ending).  This book prompted us to write about our on First Day, that I look forward to reading tomorrow.

Looking forward to tomorrow!

Have a great night!
