MORE FRACTIONS!

COMPARING FRACTIONS WITH DIFFERENT DENOMINATORS - CHOCOLATE BAR PROBLEM

ANOTHER CHOCOLATE PROBLEM (WE REALLY LIKE CHOCOLATE!)

WE ENDED THE DAY WITH A REAL CHOCOLATE EASTER TREAT  - THANK YOU! IT WAS DELICIOUS!

Let's not forget....our school-wide bunny hop!

REAL LIFE FRACTION PROBLEMS

WE ALSO LEARNED TO COMPARE MIXED, PROPER, AND IMPROPER FRACTIONS WITH LIKE DENOMINATORS.

Although, we have no photo proof, students learned to use benchmarks to order fractions with different denominators.  Using a number line, students ordered fractions by comparing them to 0, 0.5, and 1.

We discovered how easy it is to order fractions when we think of them this way.  Some students went on to add additional benchmarks to allow them to more easily order given fractions on the number line.

Finally, the past couple of days, we have been working on relating fractions to decimals (and percent).

Then we solved problems that involved comparing fractions and decimals.

We played the Number Book game from Effective Guide to Instruction Number Sense Volume 6.

Once students completed their Number Books, they were ready for a problem that relates and compares fractions, decimals and percent!  This problem was shared by Zack Ambridge on Facebook.

Here's an example of a solution...I wish I had recorded Ben. C. 's explanation - his reasoning was beautiful!

On their own, students completed a quick Exit Ticket to show me what they know.

I am so impressed with the results!  Look at what my group of Mathematicians produced!

Two problems of the week that we worked on:
